Prof. David Kazhdan and Prof. Joseph Bernstein
On 2 October 2026, Prof. David Kazhdan and Prof. Joseph Bernstein were announced as the joint recipients of the 2026 Wolf Prize in Mathematics, one of Israel’s most prestigious international prizes for scientific achievement. The award recognised their foundational work in representation theory, automorphic forms and algebraic geometry, and their role in creating the field of geometric representation theory.

Bronze Medal for Raz Hershko
On 10 October 2026, Israeli judoka Raz Hershko won the bronze medal in the women’s +78 kg category at the World Judo Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan. Hershko entered the competition as the world No. 1 and top seed in her category, and fought her way through to the semi-finals after victories over Chinese Taipei’s Ling Fang Chang, Estonia’s Emma-Melis Aktas and Brazil’s Beatriz Souza.

Israeli Universities Awarded Research Grants
Eleven Israeli researchers have been awarded 2026 European Research Council (ERC) Starting Grants, bringing more than $18 million in research funding to projects at Israeli universities and research institutions. The ERC announced the results on 3 September 2026, with the Israeli recipients based at Tel Aviv University, Bar-Ilan University, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, the Weizmann Institute of Science and the Technion.
